At the Shindig on Feb 7, an overflow crowd attended the first annual meeting of Back Country Horsemen of Florida at the lodge at Tillis Hill Recreation Area in Citrus County. A pot luck dinner was followed by President Truman Prevatt offering a brief history of the two local Back Country Horsemen chapters and the formation of the new State Chapter, Back Country Horsemen of Florida.

Then Jim McGarvey, Chairman of Back Country Horsemen of America, shared about the need for equestrians to assist and develop relationship with their local managers of public lands. He stated that there is no better way to assure the preservation of equestrian trails than to establish local chapters to assist in the management of the public lands right in their own backyard.

Doug Ott, the State Coordinator of Friends of the Forest also spoke about the partnership between equestrians and Friends of the Forest in identifying local needs and coordinating resources.

After the business meeting the crowd eagerly participated in a live auction of donated items as well as a "Chinese Auction".

The goal of Back Country Horsemen of Florida is to establish local chapters throughout Florida in order to assure the preservation of equestrian trails on public lands. For more information please contact us.
